Dragging Skyrim VR into 2020

Skyrim VR is one of the meatier gaming experiences available for VR at the moment and with some people clocking over 60,000 hours, there is a lot of value for the $60 pricetag. If the original game isn’t quite big enough, all these years modders have been adding content. I’ve seen everything from the hyper-realistic Frostfall to the immersion breaking, but hilarious Thomas the Tank Engine mod “Really Useful Dragons” (not safe for work).

I’ve compiled a list of 20 of my favorite mods for bringing Skyrim up to date graphically, and adding more immersion to the vanilla game. Aside from the ones that specifically have “VR” in the title, they’re a great addition to Skyrim Special Edition if you’re playing it on PC, Xbox One, or PS4.

First, you need to create an account with Nexus Mods and install the Mod Manager Vortex. Make sure you’ve booted up the game at least once, so that it establishes an .ini file. (For in-depth instructions, click here)

Now for the list…in no particular order:

  1. Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch — What has a lot of glitches? Bethesda Games! Crashing in VR is a scary thing. Everything fades to black. Don’t die in VR.?
  2. Skyrim 2020 Parallax — Drastically improves vanilla textures
  3. Immersive Sounds — Sounds like a good idea to me. Hear the snow…
