Facebook Makes Good on Promise to Force Oculus Users to Link Their Accounts

Last August, Facebook incited rage across the gaming community by announcing they would require a Facebook login for all future headsets. When Facebook first acquired Oculus, there was major concern that this eventuality would take place. While most would assume this to be inevitable, many promises were broken along the way.

The Oculus Rift Will Still Function…For Now

Virtual reality players grandfathered in with the Oculus Rift might think twice before picking up the Oculus Quest 2. However, their freedom from Facebook will only last another three years.

Oculus Rift players will have to merge their Oculus accounts with a Facebook account by January 2023 if they want to continue playing virtual reality games or using apps. By January 2023, these may cease to function with older virtual reality headsets.

Does This Mean Oculus Quest 2 Devices Require Facebook Accounts?

The Oculus Quest 2 is (at this time) the most well rounded device on the market. Its lower price point and tether-free status make it a very attractive introduction into the world of virtual reality.

However, if virtual reality enthusiasts want to get their hands on the Oculus Quest 2, they’ll have to link a Facebook account…
